Inspecting a room

Do you plan to inspect a room? Then make a list of questions. For example:
  • Does the room have its own staircase or am I supposed to first pass through the owner's home?
  • With how many people will I share facilities such as kitchen, shower and toilet?
  • Are gas, water and electricity included in the rent (including) or will I need to pay for these separately (excluding)?
  • What are the dimensions of the room?
  • Will there be any additional costs, such as municipal taxes, cable television and/or telephone?
  • Are there house rules? May I receive visitors or have pets?
  • Will I be given a tenancy agreement?
  • How is the room heated?
  • Does the room have any working radiators, fridges or washing machines?
  • Does the room come with upholstery (curtains and carpet), furnished or bare?
  • What is the fire safety situation of the building (check for emergency exits, fire extinguishers, etc.)?
Do not pay anything before you have inspected the room, nor if possible before signing the tenancy agreement. Moving into a room does not require a housing permit, priority declaration or proof of living/working in The Hague. If you do not live independently, you are almost never eligible for housing benefits.
