Gas, water and electricity

Very often when you rent a room, you will pay an 'included' price. This means that the costs of gas, water and electricity are all included in the rent. In that case, it is worthwhile knowing which part of the rent is for actual rent, and which is for gas, water and electricity.

If you are renting independent accommodation, you will have to pay separately for gas, water and electricity. The average consumption per person amounts to approximately €90. Payment is done in advance. You pay a fixed amount for 12 months and will receive a final settlement at the end of the year. If you have paid too much you will be refunded, otherwise you will have to pay extra. If you do not know how much you have to pay in advance, contact your gas, water and electricity suppliers or ask your neighbours.

It is advisable to have all these fixed costs paid automatically. That way you will never forget to pay and will not be faced with unpleasant surprises.

If the house or room in which you will be living has been standing empty for a while, there is a chance that you will not have any gas, water and electricity. In that case you will have to register with a provider. Examples are Eneco, Nuon, etc.
